First, the important stuff – my union activities. At the local level I’ve held every position on the PHSA Executive:
•Shop Steward •OH&S Representative •Local Chair •Local Vice-Chair •Local Secretary-Treasurer •Local Trustee
In the past, I was also Chair of the Canadian Red Cross local (now Canadian Blood Services) and a Steward in the operating room at Vancouver General Hospital.
At the provincial level, I’ve participated on several HEU committees such as Pay Equity, Global Justice and Peace, Political Action and Pink Triangle. I sat on the bargaining committee for two terms, one of which I held the position of Chair. In total, HEU committee/subcommittee work includes:
•Committee on Labour Relations •Pay Equity Committee •Political Action subcommittee •Global Justice subcommittee •Bill 29 Committee •Pink Triangle Standing Committee •Equal Opportunities subcommittee •2001-2004 Member of Facilities Bargaining Committee •2004-2006 Chairperson of Facilities Bargaining Committee
I have also held a position on the Provincial Executive for eight years in a row: two as 2nd Vice President, four years as 1st Vice President, and President for the past two years.
I have represented HEU nationally at CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) and the CLC (Canadian Labour Congress), where I lobbied the Federal Government on issues such as the economy, EI reform, pension reform and gun control. At the CLC, I held the position of Equity Vice President.
Internationally, I’ve represented HEU/CUPE/CLC at the ‘World Out’ Games and Human Rights conferences, both in Montreal and Copenhagen, and at the International Aids Conferences in Vienna and Washington DC.
My Union involvement has consisted of working with many community groups such as Downtown East Side residents, Raise the Rates committee, Qmunity (formerly the Centre for LGBT community), Positive Living BC, Aids Walk, GLISA-NA (LGBT Sports/Human Rights organization), Standing Up for Mental Health, United Way, First Call, several environment groups, and foster parent associations.
I look forward to continuing my work with these organizations and bringing HEU’s campaigns to their organizations (campaigns such as our Standing Up for seniors and Living Wage).
